ABOUT THE CLIENT:
The Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring America’s first Native American physician by restoring her 1913 hospital into a community center and wellness clinic for the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska and the residents of the Walthill area.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The project objective was to develop a comprehensive brand strategy that would establish the Picotte Center as a recognized and respected community center and wellness clinic in the Walthill area. This involved full-on brand development, including logo design, website refurbishment, event planning, email communications, social media presence, advertisements and marketing materials.
First and foremost, Luna Project wanted the center's name to be more than just a hospital. The center operated as a hospital until the 1940s and had a variety of other uses afterward, until it eventually landed on the US's top ten most endangered places in 2018. This emphasized the need to evolve the center in Dr. Susan's name and give it new life and purpose within its community. By positioning the wellness clinic as a center, it is clear that this location has an identity beyond just healthcare, and is instead a cross-cultural gathering place and educational hub.
When creating the center's logo, a rich purple was selected to honor the lilac bushes Dr. Susan planted at the center in 1913, which still bloom to this day. The icon, called a “flesche” in French and identifiable as the feathered end of an arrow, is the brightest part of the center’s visual identity and features a modern, clean-cut texture and vibrant color. The logo and typography pay homage to Native American culture's hand-crafted and heritage nature, while the flourish of a complementary typeface nods to Dr. Susan’s physician script and femininity.
Luna Project thoughtfully developed the Picotte Center’s messaging and target markets. We ensured the communications were built with the community in mind-not just wealthy philanthropists-and placed an emphasis on pride in indigenous identity, Dr. Susan's achievements, and valuing education around such related topics.
Moving forward, Luna Project has big goals for the center. We hope to have Dr. Susan’s face on city buses and commemorate her work through a local or national holiday. In the meantime, the center is equipped with a robust digital and physical presence and exceptional branding components that will establish it as a pillar in the community throughout future years.
